Born on January 8, 1957, in Kinston, North Carolina, Clark attended Garinger High School in Charlotte, where he starred as a quarterback. At Clemson University, he moved to wide receiver after the Tigers recruited four other quarterbacks, posting just 33 receptions for 571 yards and three touchdowns across four seasons.
